March Update

May your neighbors respect you, troubles neglect you, the angels protect you, and heaven accept you.--Irish Blessing

Alayna turned 8 months on March 2nd.  A couple of weeks later, she finally started to crawl.  It wasn’t a traditional crawl, but done initially with her arms and legs both straight and her body in a pike position.  She moved okay this way, but it made me nervous that if she fell it would be right on her pretty little face.  Ultimately, she realized that bent knees were faster and more comfortable.  She hasn’t stopped moving since.

Alayna’s favorite toy is her stacking cups.  She hasn’t mastered stacking them in the proper order, but loves to put one in each hand and bang.  She has a set downstairs and another set in the tub; enjoys them both equally.  Additionally, now that she’s mobile, she loves to crawl over to Amelia’s “corner” and get into Lego’s, Tinker Toys, and Lincoln Logs.  Guess who’s not happy with that?

We started trying Alayna on table food here and there this month.  Like Amelia, she loves noodles.  (Another child disappoints mommy.  Gosh, I just can’t bring myself to eat pasta!)  We had a Greek salad one night and she was happy with the chic peas and feta cheese; not very happy with the beets.  She will eat yogurt and pieces of banana and snack on various kinds of cereal.  We will keep trying other foods-here’s hoping she’s a good eater.

This little angel is just perfect for our family.  She lights up a room with her sweet smile and has this deep, throaty laugh that makes us laugh too.  At this point she is a mommy’s girl that has daddy wrapped around her little finger.

And the rest of the family…

Nick is busy with school and has recently started play practice.  The drama club will be performing “Usher” in early May.  Nick is a co-president of the club this year so he is really excited about the play this year.  It’s also an opportunity to meet new kids, always a plus.

Amelia…well, Amelia keeps us on our toes.  She seems to really enjoy school, in fact has never once said she didn’t want to go since she started in January.  We have had several conversations with her teacher over the weeks where my response has been “Are you kidding me?” This month did not disappoint.

So, for Amelia’s future embarrassment, here is this month’s encounter with Miss Rashmi.  The day started with Amelia saying she wanted to wear a pretty dress and curl her hair.  Oh she donned her dress that had a full skirt, matching socks, curls in her hair and topped it off with a pretty bow.  She looked adorable.  I drop her at school with a big smile on her face; she clearly knows she is adorable.  I return later in the afternoon and she  is walked out of school to my car by her teacher, Miss Rashmi.  The vain mother that I am is thinking, “Oh, she’s coming to tell me how cute my little Amelia looked today.”  Not exactly.  The conversation went something like this: “Mrs. Brown, I’ve never had to tell a parent this before, but Amelia is not allowed to wear dresses to school anymore.  She spent almost the entire 3 hours holding her dress up.”  Not just lifting a little bit, no sir. She walked around with her dress in her hands and her arms straight up over her head.  Miss Rashmi went onto say, “She sat in class this way, walked to art class with arms extended and sat in music class this way.  She would not keep her dress down.  I just looked at her speechless, after all what is the proper response to this?  On the way home, I ask Amelia if she did all this.  She said “Yes.”  I asked why.  “So I can show all my friends my panties and boobies at the same time” Are you kidding me….God love her!  We’ll work on the concept of modesty for the next few weeks.

As March ends, I am looking so forward to spring and the weather breaking.  I would love for all of us t be able to get out and play.  This winter has been too long and severe.

Until next month….

Happy St. Paddy's Day. Love those leg warmers, sweetie. (Amelia went to school and told the kids they couldn't touch her leg warmers, her big bow or her "lep o con" pin that grandma gave her or they would be in big trouble. She's a tad bossy!)
