May Update

“Becoming a mother makes you the mother of all children.  From now on each wounded, abandoned, frightened child is yours.  You live in the suffering mothers of every race and creed and weep with them.  You long to comfort all who are desolate.” --Charlotte Gray

Alayna turned 10 months on the 2nd.  She continues to amaze us.  She is always smiling and just so easy going.  She has a deep, throaty laugh which just makes me laugh in turn.  How does such a big laugh comes out of such a little princess?

We are starting to turn the corner on some of the sleep issues.  She will now sleep through the night, as long as she’s in our bed.  Baby steps, baby steps.  The problem that we continue to have is Amelia comes flying in our room bright and early calling “Alayna” in a very high squeaky voice repeatedly…until she wakes.  I have not been able to head her off successfully very often.  Oh well, they are both pretty happy morning kids.  If only mommy were a morning person, we’d all be happy.

At 10 ½ months Alayna finally cut her first two teeth.  They are the two bottom ones and so cute when she smiles.  She does great with most table foods; a good thing since I don’t feel any others close to breaking through.

She continues to cruise around the furniture and loves to be standing.  Alayna is getting steadier, but still no steps.  She can do her modified crawl quite quickly now (no knees down on hard surfaces and only briefly on carpet), so may not be in a big hurry to learn to walk.

In other family news…

Mid-month brought Mother’s Day.  I never thought I’d be the mother to three beautiful children.  How awesome is that?  I thank God everyday for my sweet treasures!

We started the day by going to church and then had Grandma join us for our first trip to the zoo this spring.  It was a little cool, but a pretty day.  We all had a good time, and Nick even commented that the zoo is actually fun.

Amelia finished her first semester at pre-school.  They had a nice family picnic complete with a moon bounce: her favorite.  While there were a few bumps in the road, she did amazingly well.  Her teacher, Ms. Raashme, was stern, but sweet with her, and Amelia responded very well to her.  (Her son was a kindergartener there and took Amelia under his wing--she will miss him.)  This semester she learned:  to identify and make the sounds to every letter, to color beautifully, to identify the map of the United States and pick out many of the states, knows the names to her body parts and many of the bones, and learned about insects and dinosaurs.  She can sing the National Anthem, say the Pledge of Allegiance and recites the Our Father and Hail Mary along with her meal time prayer.  We are so proud of her and her progress over the last several months.  She was so sad when school ended and asks everyday when fall is.

Nick also finished the school year this month.  We were pleased he remained on Honor Roll and thoroughly enjoyed his junior year.  Our boy is officially a senior…where did those years go?

Nick every once in awhile likes to push my buttons.  This month he did it by “winning” his sister a gold fish at a church fair.  He called me on his way home, but the deed was done.  I am so not into fish, but the look on Amelia’s face was priceless.  She named the fish Goldie Barkley.  I get the Goldie, the Barkley still has me baffled.

Everything is in bloom here and the weather has warmed up nicely.  We had the official opening of the swim club over Memorial weekend and look forward to many days playing in the water.

And finally, in honor of those who we remember and pray for this Memorial day…

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

Until next month…
